3D Localization and Magnetic Mapping of Buried Pipelines Using Drones

Pipeline Technology Conference 2022 – Skipper NDT & GRTgaz

Pipeline safety is a growing challenge due to third-party damage and urbanization. Traditional methods (radar, electromagnetic) are manual and limited by accessibility constraints. Skipper NDT has developed an innovative solution combining Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) with high-precision magnetometry, enabling continuous 3D localization of buried pipelines (longitude, latitude, depth) without direct on-site intervention.

Key benefits:

  • Enhanced operator safety

  • Fast and cost-efficient surveys in hard-to-reach areas

  • Regulatory compliance: Class A accuracy (±40 cm) per NF S70-003 standard

Validated by GRTgaz during field trials in France, the technology achieved 89% Class A compliance over 2.7 km of pipelines, even in complex environments (high-voltage lines, agricultural zones, steep terrain). This breakthrough opens new possibilities for inaccessible areas, river crossings, and pipeline straightness assessments.

Let’s Discuss Your Integrity Challenges

Whether you are assessing a specific asset, exploring new inspection approaches, or evolving an integrity management program, Skipper NDT’s team is ready to support your objectives.
