Magnetic Mapping of Pipeline River Crossings - SKIPPER NDT

Pipeline river crossings require special attention to ensure safe operation, prevent leaks, and protect water supplies, local communities, livestock, and wildlife. SKIPPER NDT has developed a magnetic mapping technology to support the pipeline industry in inspecting and monitoring assets in these complex and critical environments.

Key objectives for pipeline operators:

• Measure depth of cover to mitigate external interference.

• Identify areas of strain caused by ground movements, unstable slopes, or frost heave.

• Update GIS systems for accurate network mapping.

Technology and methods:

SKIPPER NDT provides a contactless solution using magnetic measurements, which can be deployed via UAVs or ground-based frames. The hardware includes:

• Five triaxial fluxgate magnetometers

• Centimetric GNSS and tactical-grade IMU

• Ground distance sensors and proprietary electronics for data integration

Using high-density magnetic data, proprietary algorithms generate 3D pipeline positioning and allow for the estimation of bending strain and pipeline movement. This enables the creation of a highly accurate digital twin, integrated with GIS, for predictive maintenance and risk management.

In collaboration with GRTgaz, SKIPPER NDT successfully mapped river crossings over La Seine and La Loire, demonstrating the accuracy, repeatability, and operational value of the technology in challenging environments.
