PPIM, Drone-Based Technology for pipeline movement assessment
Skipper NDT has developed an innovative drone-mounted magnetic mapping system designed to accurately locate buried pipelines and assess bending strain. The lightweight embedded system (2.2 kg) integrates 3-axis fluxgate magnetometers, a high-precision GNSS receiver, and a tactical-grade IMU. Mounted on an unmanned aerial system (UAS), this solution collects high-frequency magnetic data, calibrated through a proprietary protocol to ensure accuracy.
The processed data enables reconstruction of the pipeline’s 3D centerline and calculation of curvature and strain profiles, allowing operators to detect early signs of ground movement (e.g., landslides) before they compromise pipeline integrity.
A case study, conducted with Enbridge on a 500-meter section, demonstrated strong correlation between drone-based results and IMU inspection data, validating the technology’s effectiveness—particularly for horizontal bending strain detection. This positions Skipper NDT’s solution as a fast, contactless screening tool for geohazard management.
Key Benefits:
Rapid, non-contact inspection—even in hard-to-reach areas.
Reduced human risk and logistical complexity.
Ideal complement between two in-line inspections (ILI).
This breakthrough technology offers pipeline operators a reliable way to monitor integrity, minimize downtime, and reduce maintenance costs.
