[Abstract]

Pipeline Technology Conference 2021, Berlin

Pipeline operators require accurate 3D geolocation of buried pipelines to update GIS systems and ensure safety, particularly by determining depth of cover, a critical parameter for protection against third-party interference. Traditional methods—such as electromagnetic techniques and ground-penetrating radar—are often limited by soil conditions, manual processes, and time constraints.

Skipper NDT has developed a proprietary magnetic-based solution using Large Stand-Off Magnetometry (LSM) combined with fluxgate magnetometers and GNSS positioning. This system, deployable via ground-based carts or drones, collects magnetic field data above pipelines and applies advanced 2D and 3D inversion algorithms to compute precise horizontal and vertical positions.

Key Results:

  • Field tests with Teréga demonstrated accuracy within 0.2 m for 90% of measurements compared to reference surveys.

  • 2D inversion provided reliable horizontal and depth positioning, while 3D inversion improved section limit detection.

  • Unlike electromagnetic methods, this approach does not require current injection and offers continuous data for detecting crossings and nearby ferromagnetic anomalies.

This technology delivers a fast, non-intrusive, and highly accurate solution for pipeline geolocation and depth-of-cover assessment, enhancing operational safety and efficiency.
